You can get free Gems in Butcher Hero from quest offers, from the Gem Ring accessory, and from two event achievements that pay 500 and 1000 Gems. Spend them on shop chests, and read the Chest Level first, because it decides how good the chest loot is.

Gems are the premium currency of Butcher Hero, and you can also buy them for real money. Three free routes exist, and all of them are slow compared with a purchase, so use them together.

Gems are a different currency from Geodes, Magic Dust and Enchantment Stones, which belong to the crystal system. A quick check helps: if a reward says Geodes or dust, it is not a Gem reward.
Quest Offers
The shop shows a quest offer with the text Complete Quests and earn Free Gems. After you finish the quest, the game sends a Quest Reward message to your mail with the line Thank you for completing the quest. Open the mail and claim the reward to receive the Gems.
This is the only free source that does not depend on your gear or on a running event, so check the offer in the shop now and then.
Gem Ring
The Gem Ring is an accessory that pays Gems for kills. Its three abilities are Gem Hunt, Arbor Fortune and Fortune Amplifier. The first rolls a chance for a Gem on each enemy kill, the second on each tree kill, and the third gives a chance for more Gems when one of the first two triggers.

Event Achievements
Two achievements pay Gems directly. Gem Stash pays 500 Gems and Gem Hoard pays 1000 Gems. Both ask you to collect 50 or more crystal golems in the event, several days in a row, so they fit players who log in every day during an event. See the events page for the current rules.

The video goes through the VIP Privileges window level by level, with the daily chest and the shop bonuses each VIP level adds. Compare those rewards with the free Gem sources above before you spend anything.
Best Use of Gems
Gems buy chests, and the chests drop the gear that your hero needs. The shop sells chests named Squire, Warrior, Knight and King, plus Crystal chests named Scholar and Magister. A Chances window shows the odds for each rarity.
Players give two opinions. One says not to spend Gems on chests until you reach a chest with guaranteed Epic items. Another spent early Gems on Health Regen, which gave a big boost at the start but lost value after more progress, so treat early stat purchases as a temporary boost. Check the shop rotation often, because the game's own tip says to look for good deals on chests, crystals and souls.
Chest Level
Chest Level strongly affects the legendary drop chance and the amount of loot from shop chests. Three things raise it: every VIP level, upgrades in the Soul Tree, which has 7 Chest Level nodes with +1 each, and an achievement for opening shop chests that adds +5.

Free Daily Chests
A VIP level unlocks the Daily Chest, which is free loot every day, so it saves Gems. Higher VIP levels increase the drops and add Mythic gear.
